The United States

Dear students,

Welcome to the computer lab! :)

Today's lesson is on a new topic - The United States of America!

Go through this whole posting first to know how to plan your time. Then begin with the tasks.

TASK #1

Check the vocabulary and play with it! :) Click on <- and -> at the sides to move on to the next or last word.

After you have seen all the words, please click on the "Choose a Study Mode" button* and click on "Scatter". After doing that exercise, you can also click on "Learn" and try writing the words :) Your goal is to get to know these words really well!

Read through the text on page 15 in your textbook.

TASK #3

Based on the text**, please answer the questions at exercise 4 (textbook page 16). Please write the answers to your blog. If there are problems with your blog, please e-mail the answers to me at triin.noorkoiv@tyhg.edu.ee.

If you don't see your name on the right side of this blog in the list of "Students", please e-mail me your blog address as well.

If you have extra time left: get to know more about the US here! :)

At home:

The United Kingdom

Dear 5a student,

Today you have a new task at the computer lab, using the Internet to find out some cool stuff about the countries of the UK! :)

You have four choices* of which country would you like to focus on today. Pick one:
  • England
  • Scotland
  • Wales
  • Northern Ireland

Use Google to find out the answers to these questions and write them to your blog. Some info is there in your textbook Unit 2, too. Write the name of the country as the title (pealkiri) of your posting.

1. What is the population (rahvastiku arv) of that country?

2. What is/are the official language(s) in that country?

3. What are the symbols of that country? Please write the names of the symbols and put the pictures of these things, too.

4. What are the most famous universities (ülikoolid) in that country? Put the links to university websites to your blog, too.

5. Which places would you like to visit in that country? Please put some pictures, too :)

Enjoy the lesson! In case you can't finish all in the class, do so at home by Monday.

See you soon!

Best wishes,
Your teacher Triin

TASK 1. MAKE YOUR BLOG

Blogging is very useful for helping us to practice English more. There are many cool things for English learning which are on the computer and the Internet. That is why we are going to make blogs.

1. Go to www.blogger.com.

2. If you have a Google account (gmail, YouTube, Orkut, Picasa etc), type in your user name and password and sign in. If you don't have a Google account, click on CREATE A BLOG button and create (looma) your Google account.

NB! Please write ONLY YOUR FIRST NAME (eesnimi) for your 'Display name' (DON’T WRITE YOUR FAMILY NAME! (perekonnanimi)).

If you have just created your Google account, it will also ask you to verify (autoriseerima) yourself. Select country > Estonia. Type in your mobile phone number and you will get an SMS with a code, which you need to type in. If you don’t have your phone with you, you can also use someone else’s phone – she/he just needs to be near you with the phone.

NB! Please write down your user name and password somewhere where it won’t get lost - for example in your diary!

3. After that you will now need to give your blog a title (pealkiri).

Please give it a name your First Name's English Blog (for example, if my name would be Mihkel, my blog title would be: Mihkel's English Blog).

4. For blog address, please write 2019-yourfirstname-english after which there is going to be blogspot.com (again, if my name would be Mihkel, my blog address would be: 2019-mihkel-english.blogspot.com).

5. Click on CONTINUE button.

6. Choose a template (taust) for your blog and again, click CONTINUE button.

That’s it! You have your blog now and it’s ready for the first posting!

TASK 2. MAKE YOUR FIRST BLOG POSTING ABOUT YOUR ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES

Click on START POSTING NOW.

As the title, please type Adventurous Me (it means "Seikluslik mina" :) and write at least 7 sentences in English to tell about adventure activities. Use your workbook exercise 6 (page 6) and textbook exercise 1 (page 7) and exercise 2 (page 8) for some ideas how to start the sentences. You can also add (lisama) the other adventure activities that we have talked about - skateboarding, skating, ... If you say you like or enjoy some activity, please say also why do you like it.

Add any pictures or videos if you wish.

When your first posting is done, please send me an e-mail (triin.noorkoiv@tyhg.edu.ee) with your blog web address - I will link your blog to our class blog, too!

If you didn't manage to finish all of it in the class, please do it at home or in the library later today, and send me an e-mail as you are done.
